With the characteristics of topography, climate and weather, our country has a great potential for solar radiation, it is estimated that the technical potential for solar power development in Vietnam can be up to 340,000 MWp.
With the State’s policy to encourage the development of power sources from renewable energy, many solar power projects have been invested in construction, in which rooftop solar is a type with many advantages that can be thrive in the future.
Solar power installed on a small scale on the roofs of houses, commercial buildings, factories, factories… with a scale of a few kW to MW is called rooftop solar power (DMTAM), the structure is illustrated. as simple as this:
Common solar panels with a capacity of about 290 – 350Wp are designed as panels with dimensions of 1956x992x50 mm, an area of about 1.9m2. If the roof area is about 20m2, it is possible to install 10 panels, the maximum electrical power obtained is more than 3 kWp, enough for common electrical equipment in a family.
Advantages of rooftop solar power:
– Does not take up land area;
– Helps enhance effective heat resistance for buildings;
– Small scale, distributed installation should be connected to the existing low and medium voltage power grid, no need to invest in additional transmission grid system;
– Installed on roofs in cities and industrial zones, so it has the effect of reducing the overload of the transmission grid from traditional power sources, which are often located far from the population centers;
– With a small scale, it is suitable to encourage many individuals and organizations to invest in business with small capital, achieving the goal of socializing capital.
EVN encourages rooftop solar
EVN has been carrying out many activities to support and encourage DMTAM: document No. 1337/EVN-KD dated February 21, 2018 and document No. 5113/EVN-KD dated October 9, 2018 sent to member units. there were initial guidelines to create conditions for businesses and private investors to invest in the development of solar energy; directing the pioneering member units to install solar PV on the roofs of headquarters buildings, technical works…; strengthen propaganda activities to encourage people to invest in solar energy.
At the end of 2018, more than 3.2 MW of solar power capacity were installed at EVN’s works, of which: Hanoi Electricity Corporation 52 kWp, Central Power Corporation 352 kWp, Power Corporation the south 1,985 kWp. In the same period nationwide, it is estimated that 1,800 customers installed 30.12 MWp of solar PV capacity.
However, the unit price of solar PV installation is still high, about 20 – 23 million VND per kWp. Therefore, the cost of electricity produced is not competitive. On the other hand, according to meteorological surveys, the North and North Central regions have fewer hours of sunshine than the South Central and Central Highlands regions, and the efficiency of solar PV investment here is still low.
At the same time, due to the slow release of a circular guiding the management agency on technical standards, a specific mechanism for investors (third party) to participate in business, a financial mechanism to support for people and businesses to invest, so the scale of solar development is not commensurate with the potential.
In the Workshop “Promoting the development of solar PV in Vietnam” on February 27, 2019, through evaluating the experience of implementing solar PV projects, EVN proposed the Government: encourage agencies and organizations under ministries and branches. and People’s Committees of provinces and cities to install solar panels; there is a mechanism to support part of the initial investment capital to encourage households to install solar PV; there is a mechanism for investors (third parties) to invest in solar power on the roof of the building;
EVN also calls on donors, banks, international and domestic organizations to deeply participate in the solar PV market in Vietnam; Manufacturers, suppliers and installers coordinate with EVN in propagating, promoting and providing solutions and services to support the expansion of the solar PV market.
